#275: The Acropolis (pg 176, 2nd Ed pg 156)

Sept 30, 2019

We heard you should come here first thing in the morning or after 5:00 (it typically closes at 7pm and you want to allow for at least two hours), so we got here ~4:30pm.

The Parthenon was covered in scaffolding, but alas, she's thousands of years old, so while it would have been nice to see her in all her scaffolding-less splendor, she has every right to have a restorative facelift now and then!

We stayed until it closed so that we could see the golden hour leading up to sunset.  It was pretty magnificent to see the various buildings in the different shades of fading sun.

The Erechtheion.  I loved this structure with all the beautiful columns made in the form of women.

Parthenon at sunset.

The steps of the Propylaea.

On top of Mars Hill, where Paul gave his famous sermon (Acts 17), which is located right next to the entrance gates to the Acropolis.

Verdict:  Yes.  The history, the splendor, the notoriety.  This is a definitely a must see!  But it's also something that could easily be spoiled by crowds.  So don't go in the summer (if possible) and go in the early part of the day or the evening.  Cost: 20 Euro entrance fee.  Tip:  We brought our cell phones and ear buds and downloaded Rick Steves podcast ahead of time.  He has a great audio tour of the Acropolis available, so you can save yourself some money and not hire a guide!
