#296: Spaccanapoli (pg 183); Naples (2nd Ed, pg 178)

Naples getting ready for Christmas.

These grotto nativities are everywhere - especially down the "Christmas/nativity street."  I love them!

A nativity carver working on a piece.

Wow!

Time to go underground.....

Who knew all of this was underneath the city?!  Cool!

Naples waterfront.

The main square.

The pizza place featured in "Eat, Pray, Love."
You get four pizza choices and four drink choices. 5 euros per person.

It's simple and basic, but delicious!  But be prepared to wait!

And the famous National Archaeological Museum which is a "must do" either before or after visiting Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Verdict:  It is often said that Naples is a city that you either love or hate.  There's not a whole lot of "in between."  My husband loved it.  My cousin and his wife, who were with us, felt the opposite.  I might be the rare exception where I went back and forth and left the city with mixed feelings.  I'm glad I went and I would recommend anyone going to southern Italy to give it a chance.  On the other hand, I can understand why people don't like it.  The city is surrounded by beautiful, charming towns that are quiet, scenic, and relaxing.  And then this city can almost be a punch in the gut compared to all of that - it's loud and noisy and chaotic and seedy in parts.  It's crowded and dirty (not everywhere, but in many places) and covered in graffiti.  But it also has character.  It has world class museums.  It has an underground with history that can be explored.  And it has PIZZA!  We ate pizza in every place we went in all of southern Italy.  And hands down, the best pizza we had was here in Naples, which isn't surprising considering this is the birthplace of pizza.
