#19: Canal Cruise (pg 240; Listed as Amsterdam in 2nd edition, pg 227)

August 25, 1999: Here we are on a Canal Cruise in Amsterdam. There are 102 canals in the Netherlands, but only 3 main canals. The canals divide the country into 92 artificial islands and are all lined with houseboats.
Verdict: A great way to see Amsterdam! Especially in the summer!

Updated: 7/12/25

Since we only had one day to see Amsterdam, this wasn't initially on my list since I did this last time I was here (26 years ago in 1999) and there were so many other things I wanted to see and do.  But alas, it was an absolutely gorgeous day and Dave had never done a canal cruise and we had time after all (it only takes an hour), so after touring the Anne Frank house (which is heavy), this was the perfect way to get back outside and lighten the mood a bit.  We picked up this canal boat right outside the Anne Frank house and it was perfect!

Starting to be dusk - the lights are coming on!

Verdict:  On a perfect weather day, this is a must-do.  In fact, this is not just a must-do once, but a must-do every time you come to Amsterdam, I've decided!  So glad we did this again even though it wasn't on the original agenda!  Worth every penny!

Cost: Speaking of pennies, these are remarkably reasonably priced.  The one we went on was 22 euros a person for an hour long ride.  We chose a small boat with no windows or overhang and it was a perfect way to sight see the canals!
