#328: Evora (pg 250; 2nd Ed, pg 238)

Evora - Oct 3, 2023
The Evora Cathedral, also known as the Gothic Cathedral or Basilica Cathedral of Our Lady of Assumption, this is the largest medieval cathedral in the country.

We got there at the perfect time in the evening to have spectacular lighting for pictures and views from this cathedral, originally built in 1283.

In fact, it was here that the flags of Vasco da Gama's ships were blessed in 1497, before his epic voyage to India.

The ladies of Evora.... Kerry, Cari and Sheralyn

And if you're wondering if those bells still toll..... they do!  We were there to witness it! 🔔

We also made our way to Templo Romano, Evora's most iconic site.

This is a former Roman temple which dates back to the 1st century BCE.

There's a park that surrounds it and when we were there, there were quite a few University students and families milling about.

And the Chapel of the Bones!

While this wasn't as big or impressive as the one outside of Paris, it was still very cool and absolutely worth seeing!
The fleshless skulls
They are my company,
I bring them night and day
Depicted in my memory;
Many were respected
In the world for their talents,
And others vain ornaments,
Who served vanity,
And it may.... in eternity
be the cause of their torments.

Walking the streets of Evora.

And stopping for gelato. 🍨

And ending the day with dinner at Dom Joaquim, which I would highly recommend!  Make sure to make reservations in advance!

VERDICT:  I loved Evora.  I think you should go!  And I would also highly recommend the place we stayed, which was Albergaria do Calvario.
