#38: The Old City (page 404; Listed as Historic Jerusalem in 2nd Ed, pg 449)

May, 1997: The Old City of Jerusalem is surrounded by eight fortified gates. The two most famous/important are Damascus and Jaffa. This is Damascus.
The Dome of the Rock, built circa A.D. 690 marks the site where the Muslims believe the prophet Mohammed ascended to heaven on a winged horse. It is also revered by the Jews as the site where Abraham as commanded by God to sacrifice his son, Isaac.

I love this picture because you can see the Wailing (Western) Wall with the Dome of the Rock immediately behind it. It somewhat epitimizes Jerusalem in that Jerusalem is considered the holiest of cities to the three major religions of the Western world: Christianity, Islam and Jusaisim.

I am in the overalls in the middle of this picture at the Wailing Wall.

Verdict: There are four main districts within the walls of the Old City: the Armenian Quarter, Christian Quarter, Jewish Quarter and Muslim Quarter. And, being that it is considered to be among the holiest places in the world to three of the major world religions, it's worth a visit to see them living together amongst their sacred shrines and landmarks.  Yes!!
