#42: Koh Samui (Page 503; 2nd Ed pg 628)

July, 2004: We caught a "taxi" from the airport to our bungalow. Basically, they just threw us, along with our luggage in the back of a truck and we were on our way! I wrote in my journal, "Koh Samui had, hands down, the coolest airport I have ever seen! Just a thatched roof, so you have that island/away from the world tropical paradise feeling from the second you land."

This is probably only a cool picture to the three of us in it, but it's my blog, so I'm putting it in! This is the outside of our bungalow; It is #B9. The three of us were, at the time, roommates in Huntington Beach, California and lived in Apartment B9. What are the chances?? Anyway, we stayed here at Coconut Calm Beach on Bo Phut Beach on teh North side of the island. Coconut Calm Beach has 24 bungalows, only half of which had air conditioning. It wasn't anything fancy, but we were right on the beach, which was beautiful, the people were friendly and it felt exotic and quaint at the same time.

July 11, 2004: The four of us boarded a catamaran at 7am and set out for a 1 1/2 hour sail to the islands North of Koh Samui to snorkle. We stopped at Koh Pangan, but stayed on the boat until we arrived at a really tiny island just northwest of Koh Tao, called Koh Nang Yuan. From there, we got on a much smaller boat and that took us to Koh Tao where we just jumped off the boat and into the Gulf of Thailand! We snorkled here for an hour or so.

next, we went back to Koh Nang Yuan where we snorkled for another 2 1/2 hours, in addition to exploring the island.

Can you see this little cabin/home on the rocks? On both Nang Yuan and Tao, there were these secluded little cabins that just looked so secluded and romantic. But alas, I was with my girlfriends on this trip, so we just played on the beach! But if you ever come here as a couple, check these places out!

Verdict: Beautiful beaches, delicious food, friendly locals and very little tourism compared to other better known islands. Loved it!
